    In Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and other Latin American countries, the expression "have a straw tail" is used figuratively to refer to a vulnerable person who has something to lose, be it fame, prestige, social position, or who has secrets that cannot be revealed to the public. In the Bible, we find Jesus using the phrase, - which I am sure you know very well, - "he who is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone." It happened when a group of elders and religious people presented him an adulterous woman judging and condemning her. However, with very few words, Jesus taught them a great lesson. It appears that it is all too easy to find oneself in situations where we judge and criticize others daily. In doing so, we tend to overlook our faults while focusing on the flaws of others. We forget to show mercy, understanding, and empathy, and instead become rigid in our views, condemning the mistakes of others and exposing their vulnerabilities. Mercy is the kind and benevolent treatment of others. It is different from pity. Clemency is moderation when applying justice. The one who has mercy has compassion for the other and feels empathy when applying that justice. Empathy is walking in another person's shoes. It is understanding in the best possible way and from our limitations what our neighbor feels. The empathetic person is able to understand the emotions and feelings of others, which allows them to be supportive. Why do we judge lightly? Because we believe we are fair, correct, or blameless. Consequently, we feel entitled to judge and criticize. Forgetting that we all have straw tails. What happens to the straw when it approaches the fire? It burns. Furthermore, criticizing or judging others is a clear sign that something is wrong with ourselves and demonstrates the following including: Insecurity and lack of self-esteem: Criticizing others can be a way of trying to feel better about yourself. Ignorance or lack of understanding: Not understanding or knowing enough about another person's situation or circumstances can lead to erroneous judgments. Prejudices and stereotypes: Judging someone based on her membership in a group or categorization rather than her individuality. Envy or resentment: Feeling jealous or resentful of another person's success or achievements can lead to criticism. Fear and anxiety: Fear of the unknown or what is not understood can manifest as criticism or judgment. Social pressure and conformity: Conforming to the norms or expectations of a group or society can lead to criticizing those who do not fit in. It is important to recognize these signs and strive for empathy and understanding to overcome criticism, and easy judgment and remember that we all have straw tails because: We are not perfect: No one is free from sin, so we have no right to judge others when we have made mistakes. We don't know the whole context: We often don't know the whole story behind someone's actions, so we can't fully understand their situation. We can be hypocrites: Criticizing others for things that we do or have done in the past is hypocrisy. We can hurt others: Harsh criticism and judgment can hurt people and hurt their feelings. We must treat others as we want to be treated: The golden rule is to treat others with the same kindness and respect that we wish for ourselves. Everyone is responsible for their actions and we will all have to be held accountable. Not judging or criticizing others allows us to treat others with respect, empathy, and understanding, and prevents us from falling into hypocrisy and harming others. People with this mindset are focused on learning and see challenges as opportunities rather than obstacles. They recognize their strengths and weaknesses and remain open to learning new things and growing from them. With a growth mindset, people take risks. They face setbacks because they believe that any challenge can be conquered with determination and hard work. They accept them as opportunities for personal growth. They see mistakes as part of the process and an opportunity to learn rather than something to be ashamed of. No matter how daunting it may seem, they know that if they put in enough effort anything is possible! People with a fixed mindset avoid risks. They tend to give up easily. They tend to be more concerned with appearing smart rather than developing intelligence through learning experiences. They experience more stress when faced with difficult tasks. They believe that they cannot change their skill set. This prevents them from acting to overcome the obstacles that come their way. Those with a growth mindset are more focused on learning new skills that will lead to success in whatever endeavor they undertake, whether it's mastering a language or taking on a new job role at work. What can we do to develop an open mind to learning? According to experts in this field, it is vital to accept challenges and setbacks as opportunities for growth. Because life is full of difficulties. If we fall on the first try and stay there, we are headed for failure. It's like when we were learning to walk. We didn't walk on the first try. We fell many times. Many others use supports such as walkers, the wall, a chair until we finally walk without falling and on our own. Neither you nor I gave up, because we walked!!! So, understanding that failure is part of the learning process, we can use every setback as an opportunity to learn and grow. The first step is therefore to look for lessons in every setback. Acknowledging mistakes is difficult, but it is necessary if we are to learn from them and move forward. Ask yourself what you could have done differently and how you can improve your performance in the future. Instead of staying in the wrong and blaming yourself for what didn't go well. Doing this will help you stay focused on improvement instead of dwelling on the negative. Second, set realistic goals and expectations. It's important to challenge yourself with goals that are achievable, but go beyond your usual limits and without setting yourself up for failure. This will give you a sense of accomplishment and keep your motivation high so you don't get discouraged or overwhelmed by bigger tasks. Third, recognizing our strengths and weaknesses helps us better identify our potential and find areas for improvement. For example, it helps to be aware of what triggers negative thoughts about ourselves and to analyze the root cause of those thoughts.   • Talking to Our Kids About Sexuality

    Children are curious about their bodies. They start to see the differences between males and females and between adults and them at a very young age. Moments to start a simple, clear, concrete and useful talk full of values are presented every day. Talking to our kids about sexuality will help them learn about themselves and how to relate with others. Sexuality is an important issue. It cannot be reduced to a single dialogue. The conversation may not be easy either. That's why we are here, to offer you some suggestions to make it easier for you to talk to your children without taboos. To develop this article, we spoke with Silvia Beltrán, Associate Director of Bilingual Education for Planned Parenthood Federation of America. In October, that organization celebrated 'Let's Talk Month', to encourage honest communications about sexuality between parents and their kids. Beltrán says in October, Planned Parenthood emphasizes the importance of starting and maintaining open conversations that help our children face some of the same challenges we experienced, to teach them to feel comfortable with their body changes and live the first crushes. For parents, it can be overwhelming to talk to their children when they start asking about sexuality. Their natural curiosity give us the opportunity to engage in constructive dialogue. This information will help the child to develop a healthy vision about his sexuality and that of others. That, will also allow him to take care of it and respect it, two basic ingredients for the promotion of self-esteem. "There's no perfect way to talk about sex and relationships. Parents who want to start creating these spaces and do not know how to do it, they can always find informative resources about adolescence, sexual health, pregnancy, identity, personal safety and even key tips for conversation with children according to the age range", Silvia expands. You will not only have to talk about sexuality, but also about how to prevent sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy, risky behaviors, social pressures and general health. Doing it as a family and progressively instead of having "the conversation" relieves pressure and helps your child gradually process family values and the information he is receiving. Hence, the importance of frequent conversations. Additionally, Silvia Beltrán emphasizes "it is okay not to have all the answers; the important thing is to have that family space to listen, validate their feelings and be present when questions and experiences arise". These regular conversations express on their own that these topics are natural and important enough to keep coming up, and that they are part of life. They don't have to be serious or dramatic. They can be spaces for meeting with joy, which will favor the construction of a sexuality without shame or stress. The taboo on sexuality still remains nowadays. Parents recognize the importance of providing information they didn't receive, but some are afraid of not doing it right and harming the child. And as we said at the beginning, the day to day spontaneously gives us natural events that will help to start a conversation with the kids. Silvia shares some examples: When a family member, friend, neighbor, or you announce your pregnancy. When topics related to puberty, being in a couple, LGBTQ, love or sex are covered in TV shows, movies or songs on the radio. When gender stereotypes are presented in advertisements, games, television, books, movies, etc. If you see unrealistic or oversexualized depictions of the body (i.e. celebrities or models with Photoshop). Advertisements for pads and tampons, contraceptives or condoms. News or advertisements that talk about sex. These are moments that can occur at any time, even without expecting them. But how can we start that conversation? Silvia Beltrán suggests you consider an open-ended question such as: What do you know about how pregnancy happens?" What do you think about the fact that that celebrity used Photoshop on the cover to look different from what it is in real life?" How do you feel to see that this doll ad is only pink and only girls participate?" What would you do if someone you date starts acting the way this character does on the TV show?" Planned Parenthood has informational resources designed especially for Hispanics and Latinos. A blog called Sex Without Shame where all the most common topics and questions are addressed in a simple way with a concise explanation. Chat/Text is an app that offers a fully anonymous and data-private way to communicate with sex education experts via text messaging. A series of explainer videos that can be found on YouTube where topics about puberty, ovulation, ejaculation and more are addressed. And, informative guides are available on their website. To build an open and available space for a dialogue is precisely showing our kids that we are there for them, no matter what, why or when. Actively listening to the questions and explanations our children ask will provide feedback that in turn will encourage other conversations. Perhaps, it is time to consider what are our children needs, and we as parents know them. There is no worse information than that which creates fear and rejection and the one that you don't share. Let us not leave this issue in the hands of outsiders. Let us be the protagonists of their education. Informing them correctly about sexuality, drugs and other issues is our responsibility, the more information, the less risk.
