Coffee: A Healthy Addiction

Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the world and the second most consumed after water. And it's not just because of its delicious taste, but also because of its numerous health benefits. Some benefits are attributed to coffee such as:

  • Energizes and improves concentration.

  • Reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases

  • It provides antioxidants and can help prevent cancer.

  • Improves brain function and reduces the risk of dementia.

In the following paragraphs, we talk with two coffee-loving brothers, Francisco Rivero Valera, cardiologist-internist, and lawyer Virginia Rivero Valera. Both from Venezuela, they help us discover if these benefits are true and to recognize other aspects about coffee.

Coffee, that aromatic and stimulating drink, has been the subject of numerous studies and debates regarding its impact on cardiovascular health and other aspects. Let's explore some of the effects of coffee and caffeine:

Positive effects
  • Increased energy: Caffeine, present in coffee, can provide a boost of energy and help fight fatigue.

  • Improved concentration and memory: Some research suggests that caffeine can improve concentration and short-term memory.

  • Metabolism and fat burning: Caffeine can stimulate metabolism and increase fat oxidation.

Negative effects
  • Cardiovascular effects: Coffee was long believed to increase the risk of heart disease due to its effect on blood pressure and heart rate. However, more recent studies have questioned this relationship.

  • The heart and arteries Invisible armor for the arteries: There is no solid evidence that coffee acts as “invisible armor” for the arteries. However, some studies suggest that moderate coffee consumption is not associated with an increased risk of myocardial infarction or hypertension 1.

  • Guardian of the heart: Although we cannot consider coffee as an absolute guardian of the heart, its moderate consumption does not seem to be harmful to cardiovascular health in most people.

Caffeine and pregnancy: For pregnant women, moderate caffeine consumption (up to 300 mg per day) does not appear to significantly increase the risk of maternal complications or birth defects. 1
